What if this kingdom really is cursed? It is cursed. With a lunatic logic. A death drive. Its castle made of glass and concrete... and cancer. What if somehow you knew how to break the spell and only you could bring the light? What if somehow you had found the key that could unlock the chains? The magic key that could free us all. Would you use it? You have to use it. - Amy Jellicoe, Enlightened
All hail Amy.
This month I vowed to only watch movies or TV shows that were nourishing for my soul. I found a mini-series that fit the bill and fell in love. Appropriately it's called Enlightened, a combination of tragedy disguised as comedy at it's best. Expertly written by Laura Dern and Mike White (two of the main characters) it was nominated for 7 Golden Globe awards and Laura Dern won a Golden Globe for Best Actress.
I've come to admire the character Laura Dern plays, Amy Jellicoe. I have even found myself approaching situations with the same vibrant hope regardless of my fears. Amy represents the ultimate heroine: she's been through the storm, been to the top, fell down, and awkwardly finds her way through the maze of life with a smile. She’s self-obsessed, socially awkward, neurotic, but in the end she wants the world to be a brighter place.
Some days, you feel like the world is against you. And everyone around you seems so mean and ugly. There are times I just burn with hate. In those times... I am ugly, too. I don't want to hate. I want to be kind, and waken the kindness in others. - Amy Jelliceo
Amy is very human. She shows her flaws. She let's us feel her mistakes because we all make mistakes, we all act for selfish reasons as much as we sometimes act selfish for good reasons.
At times it's difficult to watch Amy because she's so brave while being so naive, making the audience squirm. She might bust into board meetings or pretend to be cool in front of her perverted boss. We squirm, but Amy doesn't squirm. She faces her fears head on.
I've found myself in a lot of awkward and odd situations lately and I've thought, "What would Amy Jellicoe do?"
Unfortunately the series got axed after the second season with people begging it to continue. USA today, The Huffington Post, People Magazine and millions of fans were flabbergasted at the decision from HBO. Critics and passionate fans clogged Twitter and blogs pleading with it to be renewed for a third season. I just saw this article that looks like we might get Enlightened back soon. Either way seasons one and two are perfect just the way they are and totally worth the watch.
I think the show's "stick it to the man" message might have been too much for HBO to handle. Enlightened went the mile to point out the flaws of big corporations and showed how one person can make a big difference. I'm crossing my fingers it comes back.
