Sometimes you wonder who your real friends are. I have a ton of awesome people that will come to my rescue but sometimes I forget to ask for help because I don't want to bother anyone. Then there are friends that know when I stop texting back it's a silent "mayday" call for help.
I was having one of those kinds of birthdays last February. Depressed as hell, wondering if my boyfriend was "all in" or if, after a year, I was in a holding pattern. I simply wasn't feeling happy or sexy. Then my best friend Kate decided to show up, with a tiara. Yes, I wore a fucking tiara. This might not be a big deal to you, but it was embarrassing to me. Kate told me to put on my best black dress, then she threw a few strands of pearls on my neck and said we were going to pretend we were playing Breakfast at Tiffany's. Mind you I'd never seen that movie, so I had no idea what that meant. (I've since watched the movie and I see how awesome it was to play the feminine role of letting someone spoil me.
We went to Gracie's restaurant located at the Hotel DeLuxe. With soaring ceilings and the elegant style of Hollywood it was the perfect for Kate and I. We are extremely gregarious and loud so we dressed to the nines and walked in like movie stars. I was still embarrassed to wear the Tiara until the women in the restaurant all complimented me on how they thought the Tiara completed my Hollywood birthday suit.
My whole mind and body shifted and I felt beautiful again and Kate was shining. I guess if you want to feel good it's great to dress up and play movie star for a day. It was the best birthday surprise ever. I needed it. Next year I'm gong to wear the tiara like a thug!
